APR 2025

OpenAI ships shopping in ChatGPT

ChatGPT gained the ability to surface product recommendations with images, pricing, and reviews inline. No ads, no sponsored placements. Just the products the model thinks are best. Shortly after, OpenAI and Stripe co-released the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) to standardize the entire checkout flow inside chat.

Shopify opens the Storefront MCP

At Editions Summer ’25, Shopify launched the Storefront MCP, letting developers build AI shopping agents that can search products, answer brand questions, create carts, and initiate checkout on any Shopify store.

Google, Shopify, Walmart, Target, Etsy, and Wayfair launch UCP

The Universal Commerce Protocol arrived as the open standard for agentic commerce transactions. Backed by six of the largest names in retail and tech, UCP defines how AI agents discover stores, negotiate checkout, link identities, and manage orders.
